Glendale is a serene neighborhood in west central Queens bounded to the north by Middle Village and Rego Park, to the eat by Forest Park and Kew Gardens, to the south by a number of parks and the Forest Park golf club and cemeteries and to the west by Fresh Pond, Ridgewood and Cyprus Hills. From the 1870's up until the First World War the original farms in the area were divided into residential lots which today are occupied primarily by one and two family houses. Family shops opened along Myrtle Avenue which to this day remains the main retail strip, offering numerous culinary delights and a full range of essential services including supermarkets, drugstores, dry cleaners, and banks.
Glendale is a solid working-class neighborhood comprised mainly of the descendants of the original residents. Originally drawn to the area in the 1930's by employment opportunities in the textile industry, a high concentration remains to enjoy the many European restaurants and specialty shops that cater to their tastes.
Patchy foliage lines the residential streets and the memorial parks set an expansive backdrop of open space. Forest Park provides tennis courts, a fine golf course and free Sunday afternoon concerts by the first rate Queens Symphony Orchestra as well as open fields for sunbathing and ball playing.
